Early Signs Your Drain Field Might Be Struggling

What it tells us: Dye testing is good for spotting obvious failures, like surfacing effluent or cross-connections to storm drains. It doesn’t measure capacity or predict future failure, but it’s a helpful first screening.

Hydraulic Load or “Stress” Testing

What it is: This test looks at how well your system can handle a controlled volume of water over time. We introduce water (sometimes directly to the tank or distribution box) to simulate heavy household use, then monitor how the drain field accepts and disperses it.

What you can expect:

  • We’ll locate and access key components like the tank and distribution box, which may involve uncovering lids.
  • We’ll measure and carefully control how much water we add and how fast we add it.
  • We’ll check for backup into the tank, rising water in inspection ports, or surfacing in the yard during and after the test.

What it tells us: A hydraulic load test gives us a clearer idea of the drain field’s current capacity and whether it’s accepting water properly. This type of test is common during real estate transactions or when there’s a history of intermittent problems.

Soil Evaluation and Inspection Ports

What it is: Sometimes we need to understand the soil and absorption area better. That can mean digging small inspection pits near the drain field, installing monitoring ports, or reviewing existing soil tests from when the system was installed.

What you can expect:

  • We’ll identify the actual footprint of the drain field (which isn’t always where homeowners think).
  • We may dig a few small test holes to check soil type, moisture, and depth to seasonal groundwater.
  • We may recommend adding inspection ports so future checks can be done without additional digging.

What it tells us: Soil conditions and groundwater levels are critical to long-term drain field health. These evaluations help us see whether the original design still makes sense given current conditions and usage.
